What the wise ones know— the friends of God, the artisans of life, the apprentices of love— is NOT TO WAIT for tragedy or trauma to wake them up to the incomprehensible surprise of being, to the dizzying resplendence of the universe, to the intricacies and ecstasies of the earth, to the sacredness of the other — human and other-than-human — to the unfathomably wondrous mystery of their own being, to the gift of this moment and this breath, and to the extravagant blessing of living which comes from Divine generosity and the superfluousness of God’s love.
