When a beggar asks for food is God not bread, or the one who gives it, for the one who needs it? Does not the unfortunate woman say “God bless you” as you turn and go your fortunate way? And if you are the one who gives it today after leaving the store after leaving church, is God not the one who asked you for help and called forth the beauty from within you? Or perhaps you saw the beggar before she saw you and you took the long way from your car to the other sliding door of the grocery store. Is God not the still small voice tweaking your conscience as you fill your cart with food to fill your never empty stomach so that when you exit the store you come out the other door where your God stands waiting? And after giving her a plastic wrapped sandwich and a bottle of water and some dollar bills, as you turn to go your way today will you not cover her words with yours and say “God, bless you”? And is this communion you shared not as holy as the one from which you came?
(The way I see it), this is a tension, blessed or otherwise.
