Lent is a season of apparent opposites — penitence and the promise of new possibility — that points to the paradox of the paschal mystery in which a Good Friday brings death and a Sunday on which a “magnificent defeat” brings life. Today, in an unprecedented way, we are confronted with the tension between the immediate reality brought on by a pandemic that for many brings with it uncertainty, anxiety, fear, isolation, hardship, sickness, and death and, for people of faith, the hope, trust, and conviction that even the longest, most bitter winter gives birth to spring and the last word is God’s, and that word is LIFE.
