Avoiding the Temptation of Spiritual Bypass


It seemed to me this morning— that with 170,000 deaths (in the USA alone) into the COVID calamity, with many persons dying without the comfort and nearness of loved ones, with truncated funerals or graveside services that add more sadness to the already present grief, with the roughly 25 million Americans whose employment has been disrupted, amidst the complete unveiling of the racism that has plagued this country and world for centuries, not to mention the divisiveness perpetuated rather than deescalated by political leaders or the continued desecration of the earth—that the following reflection originally posted in February 2010 might be appropos (and perhaps helpful).
