A New Year’s Manifesto

As we turn the page on the year 2020,
let us hope, pray, and play our part
in seeing that in the coming year

humility trumps arrogance
honesty trumps duplicity
truthfulness trumps deceit
sincerity trumps cynicism
integrity trumps disgrace
modesty in accomplishments trumps taking credit where little credit is due
healthy self-forgetfulness trumps unhealthy self-absorption
courage to admit wrong trumps cowardice of placing blame
accepting responsibility trumps taking no responsibility
large-heartedness trumps small-mindedness
decency trumps obscenity
nobility trumps indignity
magnanimity trumps soullessness
forgiveness trumps vindictiveness
reverence trumps profanity
deep sympathy trumps apathy
compassion trumps callousness
solidarity trumps divisiveness
strong leadership trumps timid followership
encouragement trumps ridicule
faith trumps fear
radical amazement trumps resistance to being moved
“ooh” & “aah” trump “whatever”
gratefulness trumps entitlement
laughter trumps stone-heartedness
delight trumps sadness
joy trumps misery
praise trumps grief
generosity trumps me, myself, and I-ism
welcoming trumps attacking
listening loudly trumps talking noisily
acceptance trumps rejection
open-heartedness trumps prejudice
invitation trumps exclusion
neighborliness trumps hostility
befriending trumps bullying
the good of others trumps personal expediency
goodness trumps corruption
justice trumps egregious unfairness
satiation of all trumps starvation of many
nonviolence trumps violence and violation
going to peace trumps going to war
grace under pressure trumps disappearing in the face of pressure
kinship with the earth trumps desecration of the planet
ecocentrism trumps egocentrism
seeing and valuing the preciousness of each person trumps vile racism
special care of the vulnerable trumps special favors for the powerful
wisdom trumps ignorance
hope trumps despair
kindness trumps cruelty
beauty trumps whatever beauty is vulgar
whatever tries to deny beauty
harm beauty hide beauty
outlaw beauty undo beauty
love trumps indifference
life trumps death
2021 trumps 2020
the circle trumps the triangle
and we begin again —
humility trumps arrogance . . .

  1. Thank you, Dan, for a year of wise words & prayers & song, & hope, and reminders of who we are and who we are meant to be. God bless you. And in the words of Tiny Tim, “God bless us every one.”
