Aka Father’s Day
Since becoming a father, this day has always seemed a little off-kilter to me. Shouldn’t this day be called Mother and Child Appreciation Day? After all, what little the father-to-be had to do with becoming a dad—from what I recall—was pure enjoyment, while for the mother-to-be it was a labor of love-cum-blood, sweat, and tears—or as Carol Burnett once said was like pulling your lip up over your head. And for the little munchkin-to-be kudos are due for poking their heads out, taking a look-see, and despite seeing the mess their parents and grandparent’s generations have made of things decided not to throw it into reverse but instead to grace us with their presence. Know what I’m sayin’? Being a dad is the day-to-day opportunity to enact our gratefulness for what we could not have done on our own. At best credit us with a hockey assist. At worst give us a baseball pitcher’s save [The video clip below is evidence of the latter].
