THE BLESSED TENSION:
Holding the Truths
of Meaningful Differences
What we need is a daring spirit. What we need are wisdom paths rooted in “the hidden ground of love.” Paths that not only guide us deeply into the contradictions and crucibles of daily existence but also that truly enliven us as we go by offering hope, engendering transformation, encouraging compassion, promoting justice, fostering joy, and cultivating wisdom.
This year in H&H, we will journey together on one such path by discovering what it means to hold consciously the truths of apparent opposites and to live intentionally the blessed tensions of meaningful differences.
It takes courage to lean into hope during these times, to hold the tension of apparent opposites— things like dying and loving, being still and still moving, brokenness and wholeness, radical amazement and deep sympathy, grief and praise, diminishment and flourishing, pain and humor. It takes companions to trust that the tension that holds these odd couples together hides a blessing stronger than the differences that seem to keep them apart. It requires a trust that God is upsetting the balance, that joy is greater than sorrow, and that as the evangelical theologian Karl Barth heard in the Catholic Mozart’s music, that the Yes rings louder than the ever-present No. It’s called the paschal mystery. So come, let’s walk together the way of wisdom and the path of life through death.
Each gathering we include a combination from our five characteristic movements: (1) silence for prayer and personal reflection; (2) spiritual practice; (3) reverent dialogue in companion circles; (4) thoughtful presentations; and (5) ritual action.
Come, be part of this circle of sacred dialogue and holy listening. We love new friends and new faces (even older faces). There is always room among us.
